Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties would be hit particularly hard by defense budget cuts scheduled to take effect next year, according to data compiled by a pro-defense think tank in Washington.
The Center for Security Policy, founded by former White House defense official Frank Gaffney, estimated potential losses for each county at 18 percent of defense contracts for local companies in 2011. The cuts, known as “sequestration,” are a provision of the last federal budget deal that calls for automatic across-the-board spending cuts unless Congress reaches a deficit-reduction deal.
