Guam – The mandatory cuts to federal spending known as “sequestration” will have a serious impact on federal defense contracts on Guam, unless Congress acts to head off the implantation of those cuts before the end of this year.
“Sequestration” is the word used to describe the mandatory cuts in federal spending which will take effect January 1st under the debt limit law passed last year by Congress. That law created a “Super Committee” which tried but failed to agree on spending cuts. As a result, that same law now requires $1.2 trillion dollars in mandatory budget cuts, half from the military and half from domestic programs.
A pro-defense lobbying group, the “Center for Security Policy for the Coalition for the Common Defense” compiled a series of reports showing the impact of “sequestration” in every U.S. Congressional District, including Guam.
The Center’s avowed aim is “to educate and engage the American public on the importance of maintaining a strong national defense.”
