Guam – The mandatory cuts to federal spending known as “sequestration” will have a serious impact on federal defense contracts on Guam, unless Congress acts to head off the implantation of those cuts before the end of this year.
“Sequestration” is the word used to describe the mandatory cuts in federal spending which will take effect January 1st under the debt limit law passed last year by Congress. That law created a “Super Committee” which tried but failed to agree on spending cuts. As a result, that same law now requires $1.2 trillion dollars in mandatory budget cuts, half from the military and half from domestic programs.
A pro-defense lobbying group, the “Center for Security Policy for the Coalition for the Common Defense” compiled a series of reports showing the impact of “sequestration” in every U.S. Congressional District, including Guam.
The Center’s avowed aim is “to educate and engage the American public on the importance of maintaining a strong national defense.”
You can see the reports for each Congressional District on the website: forthecommondefense.org

About the Coalition for the Common Defense The Coalition for the Common Defense is an alliance of like-minded individuals and organizations who believe that without provision for the “common defense,” as articulated by the Founders, the freedom that has allowed unprecedented opportunity and prosperity to flourish in this country would soon be imperiled. In this new age of budgetary cuts, the Coalition rejects the false choice between military strength and economic health contending that economic prosperity depends on a strong national defense. Through a series of events and strategic partnerships, the coalition is calling on elected officials, candidates for office and others who share our commitment to the common defense to uphold these principles. We must return the United States to sensible fiscal principles without sacrificing our national security.
